Gallery 10 [TOH] is pleased to present Re: Reflection, a two-person exhibition by Koichiro Tada and Hikaru Taniguchi.
Taking inspiration from the beauty of the sky, the exhibition explores the physical phenomena of light as it fills the atmosphere, and the ways these phenomena resonate with our emotions and memories. Through the medium of painting, the artists delve into this profound relationship.
The sky appears blue because shorter wavelengths of sunlight are scattered through the atmosphere. Just as such scientific phenomena of color can evoke poetic emotion, painting too produces color through the reflection, absorption, and transmission of light—engaging with the inner world of the viewer.
In this exhibition, the artists pursue the depth of pictorial surface and color, achieved through the delicate handling of acrylic, oil, metallic pigments, canvas, and wood grain. Painting, moreover, changes its expression depending on season, weather, time of day, and site, responding to the viewer’s inner state as well as the memory of place.
Light enters a space from the sky, fills the room, reflects on the surface of a painting, is perceived through the retina, and acts upon what we call the “mind” within the brain.Re: Reflection presents paintings situated within this continuous cycle of light and perception—paintings of the sky itself.
