Maiho Takahashi, born in Chiba in 1992, transitioned from illustrator and designer to artist. Drawing on
her background as a designer, she has created paintings featuring young girls rendered in clean, refined lines, infusing elements of anime, gaming, and traditional Japanese culture. In recent years, her work has turned its focus toward children, highlighting their innocence as well as the complexity of their environment. Centered on themes of peace and love, she has pushed her expression in increasingly rich and nuanced directions.
For this exhibition, Takahashi makes her first foray into fabric‑canvas collage. As a testament to love founded on communication, she incorporates canvas scraps gifted by fellow artists and wood donated by a friend of her grandfather who experienced World War II.
Recurring motifs in Takahashi’s work—beds, houses, and stuffed animals—offer a warming, protective presence to her young female figures. Little ghosts and angels accompany them, while missiles and guns—symbols that might otherwise threaten peace and life—are rendered cutely yet coexisting within the works. Through this juxtaposition, Takahashi’s art becomes a prayer for protecting the future amid today’s tragic global realities.
