At Gallery10[TOH], we are pleased to present “Gyoza and Rice” by LIU QI.

Born and raised in Japan, Liu Qi is of Chinese heritage. During a job interview, she was once asked whether she had ever experienced unpleasant treatment as a Chinese person. Though the question was not asked with malicious intent, it revealed an unconscious gaze that seeks to understand others primarily through nationality rather than individuality.

This work does not approach intercultural understanding or discrimination through a simple structure of perpetrator and victim. Instead, it examines how the act of categorizing others may also exist within oneself.

Drawing from the artist’s own experience of growing up between two cultural spheres—Japan and China—the work questions what “borders” truly are, and how we come to understand others.

Perhaps what is required to engage with others across borders is not the erasure of difference, but an awareness of the unconscious biases that exist within ourselves.
